Director Josh Trank has enlisted in a new intergalactic adventure that will take him to a galaxy far, far away.
Lucasfilm announced on Wednesday via the official Star Wars website that Trank has signed on to direct what will presumably be the second of at least three planned Star Wars standalone films. With the second stand-alone film scheduled for 2016, the Trank-directed feature would likely bow in 2018.
Trank’s feature-film career took off in a hurry with the success of Fox’s Chronicle. Fox was so impressed with the young filmmaker that they brought him on board to direct a reboot of the Marvel property The Fantastic Four, which is currently in development. Trank would direct the Star Wars standalone film after he completes The Fantastic Four, assuming that film sees the light of day if recent rumors of its early demise are to be believed.
Trank joins another successful young filmmaker in Gareth Edwards, who was signed to direct the first Star Wars stand-alone film. J.J. Abrams is currently in production on Star Wars: Episode VII, the first film in a new trilogy and sequel to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
“The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood,” stated Trank in the official announcement. “The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”
Rumors suggest the first two Star Wars stand-alone films will feature stories centered around Yoda, Boba Fett, or a young Han Solo. Lucasfilm has announced nothing definitively as of yet. We could learn more about the first stand-alone film before the year is out.
