James Cameron Wants to Shoot Avatar 2 and 3 Simultaneously

James Cameron is using the Avatar: Extended Edition on Blu-ray Disc and DVD press rounds to update folks on the status and current plan for the film’s sequels.

“Our plan right now is to do two and three as a single large production and release them a year apart,” Cameron said when asked about the schedule for Avatar 2. “In order to do that, we have to refine our technical processes beyond the end of where we were finishing Avatar one a year ago. We need to future-proof ourselves out five or six years to the end of the third film.”

That refining process is currently underway but Cameron gave no indication on when it might be completed. He could potentially move forward and complete Cleopatra with Angelina Jolie before Avatar 2, but assures us that Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 will be shot simultaneously with no other project interfering with either.

Cameron also reiterates that just because we saw Sigourney Weaver’s Grace die in Avatar doesn’t mean she won’t appear in the sequels. “Who said she died?” Cameron boasted. “Nobody dies in a science fiction movie. Whether Grace lives or dies depends more on Sigourney’s agent than anything.”

Work is currently underway on a massive Avatar novelization that explores the time period before Jack arrived on Pandora up through the first film’s conclusion. Cameron plans to address Grace’s arrival on Pandora, the discovery of Pandora, and the backstory on Earth. The novel is expected to serve as a “bible” of sorts for other creative minds to introduce their own Avatar side stories in other mediums.
