James Cameron Hints at Avatar Theatrical Re-Release

James Cameron sat down with USA Today following Samsung’s New York City 3D TV party Wednesday evening and talked about a number of subjects relating to 3D filmmaking and Avatar. From this conversation the director spilled the beans ahead of Fox for the second time in roughly a month.

When asked about Avatar’s upcoming home video bow on Blu-ray Disc and DVD, Cameron threw USA Today a curveball and talked about its theatrical run.

“The wildcard is that we might be re-releasing the movie this fall,” Cameron revealed. “It’s kind of gotten stomped out (in theaters) because of Alice in Wonderland. The word we’re getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result. The question is the appetite still going to be there after the summer glut of movies. We’re going to assess that. We’re talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative.”

Cameron had already mentioned in a previous interview that there were additional cut Avatar scenes set to appear on the Blu-ray 3D he spilled as coming out in November. Fox has since debunked that release date (we’ll have an update on that topic tomorrow), but it would make sense if Avatar hit theaters with new footage in say September and then those same scenes arrived on Blu-ray and DVD a couple months later. Just in time for Black Friday shopping.
