The Hollywood Reporter is reporting Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton have signed on to star in Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ The Price of Persia: Sands of Time, based on Ubisoft’s venerable and wildly successful game franchise.
Gyllenhaal will step into the role of Dastan, a young prince living in circa sixth century Persia. After a nobleman with ill intent goes after the Sands of Time, which has the ability to reverse time, Dastan must pair with fiesty Tamina (Arterton) on a quest to stop him.
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is set to go in front of the lens in July for a 2009 release. Mike Newell of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has been tapped to direct.
Odds are favorable that Ubisoft is already deep into developing a new game based on the film, which we’d expect to see on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 for starters. With any luck, Ubisoft will make an official announcement soon or by E3 in July at the latest.
