Last night’s Fringe episode titled ‘6B’ was the culmination of pulling together “seeds” the executive producers and writing team have planted in the show dating back to the first season. They knew back then what those seeds would eventually blossom into, and where seeds being planted now will lead the show should Fox renew it for one or two more seasons.
These “seeds” came to light in an outstanding interview with the show’s executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman that Syfy’s Blastr conducted. The pair revealed that the amber planted on the bus in season one was a deliberate nod of what was to come. To viewers it was a standalone episode with a strange substance. To the show it was the introduction of an important plot element.
Wyman and Pinkner didn’t stop there. They cracked open their Fringe vault a hair and explained that they’ve been laying the groundwork for as-of-yet ordered season four since early in season two. They also claim season five was being set up as early as season one and hope all the twists and turns coming up will come as an unexpected shock to viewers.
While it’s clear the Fringe creative and producing team has a five-year plan in place, there are absolutely no guarantees the show will continue. It’s move from Thursday to Friday early last month was considered a foot in the grave given Fox’s track record with that difficult evening to program. Some viewed the move as an ode to The X-Files which owned Friday evenings for many years.
Fringe ratings were strong the first two Friday’s in its new night but have dropped the past two. Last night’s episode ratings should be coming in withing the next 24 hours and I’ll be sure to pass them along.
