Facebook Adds Five Streaming Movie Rentals

Facebook’s movie streaming experiment with partner Warner Bros. must be performing well as the social media juggernaut and movie studio announced the service will expand today with 5 additional films.

Beginning today at 10am PST/1pm EST, Facebook members will be able to rent and stream Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Inception, Life as We Know It, and Yogi Bear for up to 48 hours. During this two-day window, renters assume full control of the film and can watch it repeatedly, pause and resume hours later, or utilize Facebook messaging features while the movie plays.

Warner Bros. and Facebook began their streaming experiment on March 8 with a single film, The Dark Knight. Facebook members who wanted to stream The Dark Knight in Facebook had to purchase Facebook Credits and use 30 of them for the rental. The dollar value of 30 credits is approximately $3.

The Dark Knight’s test results have not been divulged but must be commendable given an additional 5 films joining the experiment. It’s hard to imagine Facebook is not already in discussions with other studios about offering their films for rental via the social networking site.
