Disney Home Entertainment became the second studio today (Sony was first) to reveal their support for Blu-ray 3D and tease as to what titles will be first out the gate.
Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey in multiple roles will be the first film released by Disney on Blu-ray 3D. It will arrive in stores sometime in the fourth quarter of this year after the 2D version on Blu-ray has already been available for roughly six months.
Disney has also created a 3D Showcase Disc designed to be mass produced and already available to 3D hardware manufacturers. This disc is designed specifically for early 3D adopters to showcase the technology and will include 3D snippets from Disney’s vault including Walt Disney’s 1953 animated short Working for Peanuts; trailers for future Blu-ray 3D titles including but not limited to A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland and Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3; and new content created specifically for the disc.
The 3D Showcase Disc could arrive in stores as early as this summer when the first Blu-ray 3D enabled products are expected to be made available to the public. We’re already working on tracking down the cover art for the 3D Showcase Disc and will pass it along once acquired.
