The new comedy Dinner For Schmucks starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd beat Christopher Nolan’s Inception by a hair at the Friday box office, $8.4 million to $8.1 million, while the other two newcomers are a ways off.
Even though Inception takes second place on Friday, it is predicted to top Dinner For Schmucks through Sunday by $27 million to $24 million based on word-of-mouth and advance ticket sales. A win for Inception would be the film’s third straight since it debuted in mid-July.
Charlie St. Cloud with Zac Efron placed fourth on Friday below Salt with $5.6 million while Cats & Dogs 2: The Revenge of Kitty Galore could not take advantage of 3D ticket prices and made at most $4.2 million on Friday. The pet pack should come in closer to $10 million than $15 million through Sunday.
Check back tomorrow afternoon for the complete weekend box office results.
