Dead Island Movie Rights Picked Up by Lionsgate

Dead Island wowed the gaming community when developer Deep Silver released the first cinematic trailer back in February that went viral. It’s only fitting that the popular zombie-infestation game could be heading to the big screen.

Lionsgate has picked up the movie rights to Dead Island from Deep Silver and is in the early stages of developing the game for the big screen. Stefan Sonnefeld and Sean Daniel (The Mummy) will run the show via the Sean Daniel Company, with Jason Brown and Missy Papageorge executive producing.

Dead Island has already sold over 2 million copies for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the PC since its release in early September. It could receive another boost of sales when AMC debuts the second season of The Walking Dead on AMC.

Here’s the original Dead Island announcement trailer that helped sell Lionsgate on purchasing the film rights. The film is expected to feed off the trailer and game’s family ties and non-linear storytelling.
