Sony and Columbia Pictures’ Captain Phillips from director Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks and Parkhad Abdi has proven a box office sensation at a time of year when foot traffic in multiplexes is relatively light. Though the Blu-ray release date won’t come until mid-January at the earliest, pre-orders for the upcoming release are already open at online retailer Amazon.com.
Amazon’s Captain Phillips Blu-ray pre-order is for the combo pack with DVD and priced at $28.69. That works out to 30 percent off the $40.99 list price, standard pricing for Amazon with close to all new releases.
Captain Phillips has made $53.3 million at the domestic box office thus far and over $60 million worldwide. It has held up well playing against another adult-targeted dramatic thriller, Gravity, and should push its box office totals north of $75 million in North America before sailing off to Blu-ray and DVD.
