The Love Guru wasn’t smart, funny or even remotely entertaining enough to go head-to-head with Get Smart this past weekend per box office estimates.
Get Smart easily scored the top spot with an estimated $39.2 million take, while The Love Guru slid into fourth place in its debut week with a paltry $14 million.
Beating out The Love Guru were The Incredible Hulk in its second week with $21.6 million, and Kung Fu Panda in its third week with a solid $21.7 million — barely good enough for second place.
The Mike Myers and Jessica Alba comedy was dealt a crushing blow by critics before it got the gate (read our review) and that negative sentiment was echoed by moviegoers. The Love Guru now has the dubious distinction of joining Speed Racer as a shoe-in nominee for a 2008 Razzie Award.
Paramount might have sensed The Love Guru was on a collision course with disaster when they allowed Amazon.com to begin taking pre-orders for the film on Blu-ray Disc before it arrived in theaters.
