The new Bollywood film Enthiran (a.k.a. Robot to us Yankees) is the most expensive movie ever produced in India with an estimated cost of around $32.5 million. And at least half of that budget is said to be dedicated to the film’s special effects.
Robot, directed by Shankar and staring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai, looks like a hybrid of a Syfy Channel movie and a traditional Bollywood film complete with song and dance numbers. Some effects, like the robot himself, are comparable to I, Robot. Others like a giant metal snake gobbling up a police car are what I’d expect to watch late on a Saturday night.
The story revolves around a robot made to look human but never given human emotions. When his creator gifts him with emotion, he falls in love and finds himself conflicted between those feelings and his original programming.
Robot releases in India this week and will also see a limited release in other countries, including the U.S. on October 1. With any luck we’ll see a stateside Blu-ray and DVD release early next year.
Here’s the Robot theatrical trailer with some tacked on TV spots.
