Blu-ray 3D for PS3 by Year’s End?

Sony Japan (via Andriasang) has stated that the anticipated firmware update enabling Playstation 3 consoles to play Blu-ray 3D discs should be available “by the end of the year.”

A trio of Blu-ray 3D titles are already available with hardware purchases and standalone Blu-ray 3D players can be purchased now. Thus far, the only Blu-ray 3D title confirmed for individual resale is A Christmas Carol on November 16. PS3 3D games are set for release starting June 10 and will include Wipeout HD, Star Strike HD and Mr. Pain.

With millions of PS3 consoles already in households, Blu-ray 3D backers have to be looking at the PS3 owner segment as their primary target for format adoption. As a PS3 owner I’m intrigued, but need to see a clearer outline for software support before getting excited.
