Bajan recording artist Rihanna chose a huge project for her Hollywood debut in Peter Berg, Universal and Hasbro’s big budget alien invasion flick Battleship.
In the flick, Rihanna plays Petty Officer Cora ‘Weps’ Raikes who finds herself toe-to-toe with at least one of the alien invaders. Unlike her low rank, Weps is all business and fires off rounds without a hint of emotion or remorse.
Universal has released a short featurette in which Rihanna talks about working with director Peter Berg on the film, working in Hawaii on an action film, and working alongside the “superheroes” in the U.S. Navy.
Will Battleship be Rihanna’s breakout role in Hollywood or will it sink her screen career before it barely leaves the dock? That depends on a combination of her character, her performance, and whether moviegoers are interested in a film with striking similarities to Michael Bay’s Transformers flicks.
Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker and Liam Neeson, and sets sail in theaters on May 18.
