Battle: Los Angeles Drops But Still Wins Weekend Box Office

Battle: Los Angeles and its squad of marines lead by Aaron Eckhart shaved $500k off its weekend estimates but still easily won its opening weekend at the box office by nearly $13 million over the next closest competitor.

The final three-day ticket sale tally of Battle: Los Angeles of $35.6 million came without the benefit of 3D. Neither Battle: Los Angeles nor Rango, the Paramount animated flick starring the voice of Johnny Depp that finished in second with $22.6 million, were available in 3D. Both performed strong as Rango lost less than 40% off its big opening last weekend.

The only 3D newcomer this weekend was Disney’s creepily animated Mars Needs Moms. Despite an aggressive marketing campaign, Mars needed a lot more than moms to thrive en route to an abysmal $6.9 million opening considering the film’s $200 million plus budget with marketing costs factored in. Expect Mars Needs Moms to arrive on Blu-ray and DVD as early as legally possible for Disney to release it.

Taking third place was Warner Bros. Red Riding Hood with $14 million. Some members of the media were trying to push this as the next Twilight for tweens but all I got from the TV spots and trailers was a PG-13 horror that looked eerily similar to M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village. Analysts had expected Red Riding Hood to ride the Twilight crowd up near the $20 million mark.

Final numbers for the weekend box office top 10 are as follows:

  • 1. Battle: Los Angeles – $35.6m
  • 2. Rango – $22.6m
  • 3. Red Riding Hood – $14m
  • 4. The Adjustment Bureau – $11.6m
  • 5. Mars Needs Moms – $6.9m
  • 6. Beastly – $5m
  • 7. Hall Pass – $5m
  • 8. Just Go With It – $4m
  • 9. Gnomeo and Juliet – $3.6m
  • 10. The King’s Speech $3.6m
