Well, it is official now. James Cameron’s Avatar has surpassed James Cameron’s Titanic to become the highest grossing film at the worldwide box office of all time.
Avatar’s worldwide gross stands at $1.859 billion, surpassing Titanic’s previously thought unsinkable record of $1.843 billion. The feat was accomplished in a remarkable 41 days and the $2 billion threshold is sure to be broken by this time next week.
Strong overseas ticket sales that benefited from a weak US dollar and a big boost from increased ticket prices on 3D showings helped Avatar complete its march to the top.
While Avatar may be the top grossing film of all time it still has a long ways to go when taking inflation into account. Currently Avatar sits in the 26th spot while Titanic is much higher in 6th. The top spot, held by Gone With The Wind, extends far beyond the competition with well over a trillion dollars in gross receipts at 2010 dollar values.
