James Cameron’s Avatar officially became the highest grossing overseas film of all time on Saturday, knocking Cameron’s own Titanic off its pedestal.
Avatar passed Titanic’s $1.242 billion by $46 million at the box office to come in at a cool $1.288 billion. Taking inflation into account, Titanic is still on top of Avatar (for now) with $1.664 billion.
Since its release, Avatar has crossed $100 million every weekend in all of its 111 overseas markets. France, Germany and the United Kingdom are paving the way with over $300 million in ticket sales between them.
Next up for Avatar is Titanic’s worldwide gross box office record of $1.843 billion. That high mark is expected to fall by week’s end.
