Avatar Blu-ray Already Breaks a Record

James Cameron’s Avatar Blu-ray release has set the single day sales record for the format, a surprise to absolutely no one.

Early figures suggest Avatar sold somewhere in the million of 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours of release. For comparison, the previous record holder The Dark Knight moved 600,000 units its first day.

When factoring in DVD sales, more than 4 million copies of Avatar found their way into homes yesterday. This year’s combined 6.5 million mark set by The Twilight Saga: New Moon will likely fall. The all-time home video sales records could be toppled by year’s end as well.

Two more versions of Avatar are currently planned for Blu-ray Disc. A four-disc edition will be released in November that will include roughly 10-15 minutes of additional footage available to view via seamless branching (confirmed via our interview with producer Jon Landau). A Blu-ray 3D version will then make its way to stores sometime in 2011.

Fox Home Entertainment has yet to issue a press release with finalized sales numbers. We’ll share that if/when they do.
