The CW’s Arrow continues to dig into a wealth of DC Comics characters and will soon introduce the villain Mark Scheffer, played by Firefly alum Sean Maher.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Maher has joined the Season 2 cast of Arrow as Scheffer, otherwise known in the DC Comics run as the villain Shrapnel. He will first appear in the 10th episode, which happens to come immediately after the two episodes that will introduce Barry Allen, the man who will eventually become The Flash in a latter episode.
In the comics, Shrapnel is made of metal and has superhuman strength. This seems to go against the “real world” feel Arrow has demonstrated thus far, though the introduction of The Flash could change that template. It is known that Scheffer will arrive on the scene and threaten Starling City, and more specifically newly introduced Sebastian Blood, with bombs.
Maher will be instantly recognizable to genre fans as Dr. Simon Tam from Joss Whedon’s Firefly series and the subsequent film Serenity. He joins new castmember Summer Glau as the second alum from Firefly to join the Arrow family.
Tonight’s episode of Arrow will see the return of Black Canary, a new hero introduced briefly during the Season 2 premiere.
