For the second weekend in a row tweens dominated the box office while competitors were relegated to second or worse place finishes.
Zac Efron’s 17 Again unsurprisingly took the top spot with a cool $24.1 million. Though considered a strong opening, Zac comes up short $10 million against The Hannah Montana Movie’s $34 million last weekend.
Speaking of Hannah, the tween shift to Zac this past weekend took a big bite out of her box office take. With only $12.6 million Fri-Sun, Hannah can only muster a fourth-place finish after a giant 61% drop.
Other newcomers include Russell Crowe’s State of Play in second place with $14 million and Crank: High Voltage which stumbled to a disappointing $6.5 million. The Crank sequel should find a much bigger audience on home video.
The complete top ten including lingering Knowing shakes out as follows.
- 1. 17 Again: $24.065m
- 2. State of Play: $14.099m
- 3. Monsters vs Aliens: $12.9m
- 4. Hannah Montana: The Movie: $12.666m
- 5. Fast & Furious: $12.289m
- 6. Crank High Voltage: $6.51m
- 7. Observe and Report: $4.055m
- 8. Knowing: $3.478m
- 9. I Love You, Man: $3.37m
- 10. The Haunting in Connecticut: $3.15m
