Vanity Fair Delivers Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Star Wars Day aka May the 4th Be With You lived up to its name today thanks in whole to a wonderful collection of images, video and information about Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens shared by Vanity Fair in conjunction with renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz.

A cover story by VF confirmed what had been rumored for several months now starting with the chrome stormtrooper first glimpsed in the latest Star Wars Episode 7 trailer. This caped trooper is played by Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s Game of Thrones) and is known as Captain Phasma, a first officer of the New Order.

The picture was simultaneously tweeted by Peter Mayhew, the actor behind Chewbacca, in a humorous tweet.

Also confirmed is that Adam Driver will be played the villainous Kylo Ren. Up until now we had only seen Ren with his helmet on. For the Vanity Fair shoot, he’s seen at a secret First Order base on a snow planet with the mask most definitely off.

Last but not least is the name of Lupita Nyong’o’s mo-capped character. Rumors had suggested the character’s name was Rose. However, per Vanity Fair the character is named Maz Kanata and is the head pirate at a castle littered the “scum and villainy,” which a photographic collage shows off to include numerous new alien designs.

Head on over to VF to view the new image gallery including a hero shot of Poe Dameron (Oscar Isasc) and watch the fantastic Star Wars: The Force Awakens behind-the-scenes video with snowtroopers, Kylo Ren, BB-8, Daisy Ridley as Rey and more below.
