The first trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Martian starring Matt Damon and based on the bestselling novel of the same name by author Andy Weir has been released by Twentieth Century Fox. You can watch The Martian trailer below in high definition, though beware that it’s full of spoiler and unfortunately spells out a good bit of the plot.
The Martian also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Setting aside the obvious Interstellar jokes, the story focuses on a manned mission to Mars that is cut short when a violent storm bears down on the NASA astronauts that set up shop on the planet’s surface.
In the chaos of the escape, one astronaut — played by Damon — is left behind and presumed dead. Only he’s not dead, and now without means of contacting NASA he must survive in a shelter designed to support life for 31 days over the course of the four years it will take another manned mission to reach him. There’s a great line in the trailer about how Damon’s character will tackle his predicament that I won’t spoil here.
The Martian was adapted for the big screen by Drew Goddard and will premiere in theaters on November 25, 2015.
