‘Nightwing’ Movie in Development at Warner Bros; Chris McKay Tapped to Direct

The DC Films team has been busy of late. Earlier today news broke that Matt Reeves is on board to direct The Batman, and now word is out that a Nightwing movie is in the works and a director is already attached.

Per The Hollywood Reporter who first broke the story, Warner Bros. is working on a Nightwing movie starring the character of Dick Grayson aka Nightwing, a Gotham City crime fighter who once suited up as Robin alongside Batman.

The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay is already in talks to helm the project while Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) works on the script.

Ironically McKay just briefly directed Nightwing in The LEGO Batman Movie during a brief cameo in the third act. The character of Dick Grayson was central to the film’s plot making McKay a natural fit to jump from animation to live-action within the Batman-verse.

As you’ll recall in Batman v Superman, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) angrily stares at a hanging Robin suit in the Bat Cave with a message written by The Joker on it. The theory is that the suit belonged to the second Robin who The Joker killed. Grayson was likely the first Robin and perhaps returns to Gotham as Nightwing for the first time in the new film.

Given how early Nightwing is in the development process, don’t expect the film to arrive in theaters until 2019 at the earliest.
