The Lego Movie Batman Character Spin-Off Film in the Works

He’s Batman alright, and apparently Warner Bros. is so smitten with The Lego Movie incarnation of the Dark Knight that they’re giving the caped crusader his own Lego Batman movie. No Bat pun required.

The Hollywood Reporter is citing inside sources that claim The Lego Movie animation supervisor Chris McKay is set to direct the Lego Batman movie with Seth Grahame-Smith writing the screenplay.

McKay was originally attached to direct The Lego Movie 2 and that film was slotted into a 2017 release date. If McKay is indeed jumping to Lego Batman and that project is taking precedent at Warner Bros., expect Lego Batman in 2017 and The Lego Movie sequel in 2018 or later.

The Lego Movie Batman voice actor Will Arnett will return and bring the brooding, self-absorbed superhero to life once again as the headline character. There are no story details available at this time so it’s unknown whether the film will take place within the same “world” as The Lego Movie or if somehow Batman will end up at a friends house where someone has built a Lego version of Gotham City.

Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from The Lego Movie are all on board to direct the Lego Batman film.

The next Lego theatrical release is Ninjago and that film is already slated into a September 23, 2016 release date. A new season of the Ninjago TV series is expected to premiere on the Cartoon Network in January 2015.
