Today might as well be another incarnation of Force Friday as the Internet has delivered a Japanese Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens trailer loaded with new scenes, dialogue, music, spoilers, and sound effects absent from the North American trailer.
The very first scene of this trailer is a new shot we haven’t seen before with scavenger Rey standing outside a Super Star Destroyer that she either just explored or is about to explore. From a new Rey (Daisy Ridley) voiceover we learn that she’s waiting for her family to arrive, a line full of potential spoilers if rumors about Rey’s parentage turn out to be true.
BB-8 is far more prominent in this international trailer and C-3PO makes his debut as droids and robotics are more mainstream in Japan. There’s also a new beautiful raw shot of First Order Tie Fighters flying in front of the Jakku sun that plays into Japanese sensibilities.
I also love a shot of Kylo Ren cornering Rey and placing his ignited lightsaber near her face. That’s another shot left out of the North American trailer, perhaps because it’s more culturally significant to Japanese audiences.
Up first below is the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Japanese trailer, followed immediately by the North American version for comparison.
