Independence Day 2 Name is Independence Day Resurgence; First Images Released

Independence Day Resurgence

Earlier today Twentieth Century Fox held a big Independence Day movie event on their studio lot and used the opportunity to not only pay homage to the original 1996 Sci-fi modern classic, but to reveal the Independence Day 2 name, first details, full core cast, and behind-the-scenes images.

The Independence Day 2 name is nothing like the silly ID4ever or other wild guesses floating around the past few years. Instead, director Roland Emmerich and co-producer Dean Devlin will call the film Independence Day Resurgence. “We call it in the film the War of ’96,” explained Emmerich during the unveiling via a live stream of the event. “It’s like a post-world generation that’s unified, and that’s amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That’s a resurgence.”

The Independence Day sequel takes place approximately 20 years after the events of the original film. Jeff Goldblum’s David Levinson character leads a global defense system initiative to fend off future alien attacks utilizing technology culled from the downed alien ships from the first film.

Here’s the official Independence Day Resurgence synopsis:

Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Liam Hemsworth leaves behind District 12 to play a man orphaned as a child in the first alien invasion. His character, an accomplished pilot who is relegated to civilian duty after an earlier mishap, pilots a massive Moon Tug vehicle and will likely be part of earth’s first line of defense from the lunar surface.

Brent Spiner, whose character seemingly died in the original film after being used as an alien puppet, is back for Independence Day Resurgence. The working theory is that his character slipped into a coma as opposed to dying, and will have been affected by his close encounter of the mental takeover kind.

The Independence Day Resurgence cast includes newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Sela Ward, William Fichtner and Maika Monroe. Returning for the sequel are Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner. Will Smith is notably absent despite his character’s fiancee returning for another go.
