Sony Pictures has finally dropped the first The Dark Tower trailer that goes through bullets like baseball players go through bubblegum.
Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba star in the loose adaptation of Stephen King’s immensely popular book series of the same name. Is it a sequel? A complete re-imagining of the source material?
The book is still out on what exactly The Dark Tower is as the trailer provides no definitive answer. For those who haven’t read the books, like myself, the trailer paints a straightforward plot about a young boy who is drawn to an alternate dimension/world after experiencing visions about it in his dreams. There he meets the Gunslinger (Elba), a ragged hero destined to stop the Man in Black (McConaughey) from destroying the Dark Tower and ending both worlds.
Keen-eyed viewers will pick up a couple references to other Stephen King works: The Shining and IT. The Dark Tower books reference many King stories so it’s entirely possible that other King works will pop up throughout the film.
The Dark Tower also stars Tom Taylor, Claudia Kim, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee and Jackie Earle Haley. Look for it in theaters on August 4th, 2017.
