Marvel Studios recently dropped the embargo on the Ant-Man movie press studio visit pieces a couple days ago during which Marvel chief Kevin Feige was drilled by fellow media members about Evangeline Lilly’s role in the upcoming final feature film in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe Phase 2.
In the film Lilly plays Hope van Dyne, daughter to Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym character and probably Janet van Dyne, though Feige won’t outright confirm that. She’s seen training Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang character as he becomes the new Ant-Man in the trailers, but we never see her in action as The Wasp, the superhero and founding member of The Avengers that Janet van Dyne becomes in the comics.
When pressed for a scoop on how director Peyton Reed utilized Hope van Dyne in the film, Feige was somewhat forthcoming and potentially hinted that she will become The Wasp by the closing credits.
“She factors in a number of spoiler-ish ways,” Feige told the press per MTV Movies. “But we will see Janet van Dyne in action in this film, and sort of what happened to her.”
Comic fans are naturally upset that Janet van Dyne is essentially being replaced by Hope in the Cinematic Universe. If Hank Pyn’s heyday is well in the past then it makes sense from a narrative standpoint that Janet van Dyne was around at the same time.
Rudd’s Ant-Man character is already confirmed for Captain America: Civil War, but for now Hope van Dyne’s next appearance remains to be seen. The Wasp’s role will no doubt be small in the Ant-Man movie, but it’s hard to imagine that Marvel and Feige would introduce Hope van Dyne and evolve her into The Wasp if they didn’t have plans for the character to join The Avengers in future films.
