Glitz and glamour will be on display at the 87th Annual Academy Awards tonight as Hollywood recognizes some of its best work over the past year. Predicting who will win Oscars in the over twenty categories up for grabs is half the fun, so we’ve taken a two-pronged approach for our 2015 Academy Award predictions with myself and Shawn Fitzgerald sharing our picks.
The 2015 Oscars have seemingly boiled down to a two-film race for some of the top awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. This battle of the single word “B’s” features Boyhood, an ambitious coming-of-age film from director Richard Linklater shot over the course of 12 years with the same cast; and Birdman, an anti-Hollywood film that seemingly speaks directly to the members of the Academy who presumably favor substance over explosive visceral entertainment.
Ironically Shawn and I are split for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, with Shawn favoring a clean sweep by Birdman and I believing Boyhood will ultimately have the slight the edge. That’s not to say a film like Foxcatcher or Whiplash couldn’t sneak in and surprise with an upset, but these two films seem poised for the Oscars equivalent of a photo finish.
Our 2015 Oscars predictions are presented below in a table format save for a couple categories: Documentary Short Subject and Animated Short Film. We both would have been guessing 100 percent in each category so they were left out. Twenty other categories are all represented with a relatively even mix of agreement and differing opinions between us.
The 2015 Academy Awards air tonight starting at 7/6c live on ABC.
