As the battle for supremacy in the Toys to Life gaming category heats up, Activision has upped the ante by announcing a massive Skylanders Trap Team presence at this month’s 2014 Comic-Con in San Diego, California.
Cosplay is a big part of the Comic-Con experience and Activision, along with Skylanders creator and Trap Team development studio Toys for Bob, are tapping into the craze and bringing some pretty hefty incentive to draw additional attention to their upcoming game. During the “Skylanders: The Creative Process of Bringing Toys to Life” panel at Comic-Con, a Skylanders costume contest will take place that awards the grand prize winner a cool $4,000. A runner-up will take home $1,000, while a third winner will score a collection of unknown “rare” Skylanders, possibly worth more than the runner-up cash prize.
Sitting in on the panel are comic book writer Ron Marz (Green Lantern, DC vs. Marvel); Kaos voice actor Richard Horvitz (Invader Zim, Billy and Mandy); Activision’s Senior Vice President of Consumer Marketing, John Coyne; and Toys for Bob’s Director of Toy and Character Development, I-Wei Huang. They’ll talk about the development of Skylanders Trap Team and maybe reveal a new character or two.
My advice for anyone entering this contest is to go big or go home. Avoid the common characters like Eruptor and Stealth Elf where you could be competing against someone else in the same outfit. Think outside the box like teaming up with a friend and “swapping” your upper and lower halves, or find a much taller or shorter friend to create the ultimate Kaos and Glumshanks team.
