The good news for Marvel fans from Disney’s D23 this past weekend is that Disney Interactive finally named the Disney Infinity 3.0 Marvel Play Set is called Marvel Battlegrounds. The bad news is that this Play Set won’t arrive in stores until March 2016, though that could turn out to be good news if my speculation pans out.
From a marketing standpoint it makes perfect sense to push the Disney Infinity 3.0 Marvel Play Set into 2016 so that Star Wars and especially the Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens Play Set gets top billing for the holiday shopping season. Besides, the Ultron and Hulkbuster figures (pictured above) are confirmed for release on November 3 so there’s something new for the Marvel brand to put under the Christmas tree.
Fast-forwarding to March 2016, that’s less than two months before Captain America: Civil War arrives in theaters on May 6 and subsequently sets the box office on fire. Traditionally Disney Infinity Play Sets have always come packaged with two figures. Put two and two together and we could be looking at two new Disney Infinity 3.0 figures coming from Captain America: Civil War.
I’ll go a little further and speculate that characters prime for figures from the new film having previously appeared in at least one Marvel film include Ant-Man, who Disney Interactive has already teased; Scarlet Witch, to add another kick-butt female heroine to the line; Wasp, if only to compliment Ant-Man given her on-screen tease; and Vision, an Avengers: Age of Ultron fan favorite and colorful choice for the plastic treatment.
It will likely be a few more months until further Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set details are released beyond what we already know: the Play Set will be the first to feature four-player local multiplayer and is compatible with all Marvel figures released to-date with its launch. For now let your imagination run wild.
