‘Detective Pikachu’ Tops ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at Friday Box Office

Detective Pikachu Friday Box Office

The long-awaited live-action debut of Pokemon characters on the big screen churned up box office business for its debut Friday to unseat Avengers: Endgame for the first day since Marvel’s champ debuted a little over two weeks ago.

Detective Pikachu earned $20.7 million on Friday including Thursday night preview showings. An additional $43.4 million internationally pushes its worldwide box office haul to $64.1 million.

It looks like Detective Pikachu will be leaning more on domestic ticket sales versus international business. Its opening weekend here in North America should land somewhere between $50 and $55 million, with the lower end falling below expectations.

For comparison’s sake, Warner’s Shazam! picked up $53.5 million during its opening weekend. Detective Pikachu is currently pacing right alongside that.

Avengers: Endgame may have lost to Detective Pikachu with $16 million on Friday. However, Endgame should finish this weekend with somewhere around $60 to $64 million and win its third consecutive weekend.

Those numbers will push Avengers: Endgame past Black Panther and its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War, into the number three position on the all-time domestic box office records list with around $710 million. Next up is James Cameron’s Avatar at $760.5 million and that record should fall by the end of next weekend.

Speaking of James Cameron, here’s the congratulations artwork he published when Avengers: Endgame surpassed Titanic on the worldwide box office charts. Only Avatar remains for Endgame to reach.
