It’s not uncommon for Academy Award winners to see a quick boost in their theatrical and/or home video sales following big Oscars wins. Last night’s biggest upset winner is on the move while the film it upset is stuck in the mud.
La La Land didn’t win all of its categories including Best Picture as some thought it might but it did score Best Director (Damien Chazelle) and Best Actress (Emma Stone). Despite the big wins, La La Land hasn’t budged on Amazon’s Blu-ray bestsellers chart in the past 24 hours, idling in the bottom half of the top 10.
Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, on the other hand, has shot up to the number one spot on Amazon’s Blu-ray bestsellers chart. Hacksaw Ridge won Oscars for Film Editing, a big upset, as well as Sound Mixing.
Arrival won for Sound Editing and jumped past La La Land into the number six spot. There’s been a lot of interest in Arrival since its home video debut and the Oscars win only helps to solidify its appeal.
The big winner last night was bar none Moonlight which upset La La Land for Best Picture and also won Best Actor (Mahershala Ali) and Best Adapted Screenplay. La La Land may have won more overall awards with five, but the big score was meant for Moonlight.
Since its win Moonlight has jumped into the number four position at Amazon and may rise more as word continues to spread of its upset.
