Wolfenstein: The New Order Announced for Xbox 360, PS3 and Next-Gen Consoles

Wolfenstein: The New Order Announced for Xbox 360, PS3 and Next-Gen ConsolesWhen Bethesda Softworks teased a new game announcement several weeks ago, one of the suggested franchises the game would fall under was Wolfenstein. It turns out that game was The Evil Within, but that didn’t mean Wolfenstein was completely the wrong answer.

This morning Bethesda formally announced Wolfenstein: The New Order is currently in development by MachineGames. The game will be coming to Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC, and next-gen consoles (the next Xbox and Playstation 4, presumably, though not specifically named). No mention is made of Nintendo’s Wii U in the announcement, though it could technically fall under the vague “next-gen console” category.

Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media purchased the Swedish studio MachineGames back in November 2010. The team, comprised of veterans from Starbreeze Studios (Riddick and The Darkness) immediately began work on a new game using the id Tech 5 game engine from id Software. That game is Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Bethesda is billing Wolfenstein: The New Order reimagining of the franchise that planted its roots as one of the most successful early first-person shooter franchises. The first teaser trailer below proves, in addition to the fact that Jimi Hendrix music makes any trailer great, that what’s old is new again as B.J. Blazkowicz returns to take on a new breed of Nazi scum that have seemingly harnessed the power of advanced robotics to build a new kind of mechanized army with aspirations to take over the world.

With Wolfenstein: The New Order expected to be released during this upcoming holiday season, it’s a good chance that E3 will reveal the first gameplay footage and offer a better idea of how the return of Wolfenstein will play. Until then, additional details about the game are expected to be released tomorrow.
