Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful starring James Franco won its second consecutive Friday at the box office without breaking a sweat. Newcomer The Call with Halle Berry surprisingly took second, while The Incredible Burt Wonderstone with comedy stars Jim Carrey and Steve Carell was anything but in a distance third place finish.
For its second Friday of release, Oz The Great and Powerful dipped 53 percent over its opening day to $11.4 million. Thus far the prequel has made $114.2 million at the domestic box office and should finish the weekend in the neighborhood of $35 to $40 million. A sequel script has already been ordered up.
The Call phoned up some Halle Berry fans and stole second place with $6.2 million. It was only in the past week or so that The Call was looking like it might finish second and not third, and sure enough it easily was the best new film this weekend. Look for The Call to finish the weekend in the $15 to $16 million range.
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone proved Jim Carrey and Steve Carell need more than just their names on the billing to pull off a big opening. At $3.7 million on Friday, Wonderstone will barely reach $10 million through Sunday and could even end up in the single-digits if Sunday business slumps.
Landing in fourth place on Friday was Jack the Giant Slayer with $1.75 million. At $49.4 million thus far, Jack’s best days are behind him and he’ll finish nowhere near the estimated $195 million production budget.
Wrapping the top five was Identity Thief which probably stole some business from The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Another $1.4 million brought its gross to $120.6 million. A sequel can’t be too far behind.
Stop back Sunday for the complete weekend box office studio estimates to see if Oz The Great and Powerful was able to reach $40 million.
