Chris Cooper (The Muppets) has been added to the already impressive cast list for Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man sequel as Norman Osborn, the man who will eventually become Green Goblin.
The addition of Oscar-winning Cooper to the cast comes after production kicked off in New York City with several cast members including Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Shailene Woodley (Mary Jane Watson) and Sally Field (Aunt May) being spotted filming scenes on the street. It’s unknown when Cooper will begin shooting his scenes, or how featured Mr. Osborn will be in the film.
The part of Norman Osborn was originally thought to have gone to Colm Feore, another late addition who surprisingly showed up on the official cast list just prior to production kicking off. Feore’s role is now completely unknown, but definitely must have some weight behind it for his name to be included alongside the starring cast.
Norman Osborn made a brief cameo appearance during the credits of The Amazing Spider-Man as a shadowy figure with keys to Peter Parker’s past. With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 synopsis revealing that Peter will continue to learn more about his past, it stands to reason that Osborn will play a key role in the delivery or repercussions of that information.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 cast now features up to four potential villains. Jamie Foxx will definitely appear as Electro and prove a thorn in Spider-Man’s side. Spidey could also see himself going up against Rhino (Paul Giamatti), Green Goblin (Cooper) or Hobgoblin (Dane DeHann) depending on if the script calls for those alter-egos to appear in this film or further down the road.
Columbia Pictures will release The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2D and 3D on May 2, 2014.
