The Walking Dead blasted into its back half of Season 3 on AMC by pulling Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) further away from his increasingly fragile sanity. The Dixon brothers (Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker) are finally reunited after two seasons apart but own their own again, and the Governor (David Morrissey) is starting to match Rick’s mental breakdown with a new twisted agenda fueled by violence and revenge. One of the best moments in last week’s episode of The Walking Dead was Rick returning from Woodbury and walking through the room with Tyrese (Chad Coleman) and his group without even acknowledging their presence. Whereas a year prior Rick would have been compassionate toward those who need help, now all he cares about is his group and the survival of his group at any cost.
Rick’s instability has now been outed after he talked to an imaginary Lori in a wedding dress in front of his people and Tyrese’s group. With Glenn (Steven Yeun) stepping up to Rick about exacting revenge of the Governor and Daryl leaving the group to be with his brother, Rick’s leadership is on the verge of being questioned, if not terminated. Carl (Chandler Riggs) is now more focused on the task at hand and what it takes to survive than his father.
Back in Woodbury a possible foreshadowing of how the season might end took place. With the Governor withdrawn from his people and spending his waking hours imagining attacking the prison, Andrea (Laurie Holden) stepped up and showed her leadership in a passionate speech to the townsfolk. Could this be how Andrea is written off the show, left alive and leading the people of Woodbury with the assistance of Milton after the Governor is removed from power?
The Dixon brothers are now back where they started, alone and left to scrounge for supplies and rations while fending off zombies. Only now Daryl is a changed man with compassion who understands the meaning of family transcends sharing the same blood. I don’t expect this reunion to last very long. In fact, I think Merle is now the most expendable character on the show.
