HBO’s Game of Thrones took a break from its usual format of jumping around Westeros to focus squarely on Lord Stannis Baratheon’s invasion of King’s Landing in ‘Blackwater.’ While Tyrion attempted to repel a naval and eventual ground assault and Cersei and the ladies under her watch sung hymns to calm their nerves beneath the city, the other Game of Thrones storylines waited patiently to continue for the series finale. Spoilers follow via speculation based on HBO’s official Season 2 finale synopsis and promo video so proceed at your own risk.
In next week’s Game of Thrones: Season 2 finale, ‘Valar Morghulis,’ the aftermath of the Battle of Blackwater Bay will be felt. Tywin Lannister’s arrival at the last moment will be lauded, while Tyrion’s heroics appear to go unrecognized by the cowardly King Joffrey. Littlefinger will return and have some words of wisdom for Sansa, as will Varys for unlucky Shae stand-in Ros.
The incredibly entertaining pairing of Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth will return and Brienne will have to draw her sword and impress Jaime the same time. Up north, a maniacal Theon will “stir his men into action.” Further north beyond the wall, Jon will “prove himself to Qhorin” while still in captivity of the wildlings.
Jaqen is still around even after helping Arya flee Harrenhal. Might Arya travel with Jaqen or head off on her own? At the very least she will receive a gift from the man whose life she saved.
In what could turn into the final moments of Season 2, Daenerys Targaryen will enter the House of the Undying in search of her swiped dragons. A haunting scene in the promo below sees Ser Jorah Mormont scream “Khaleesi!” at the top of his lungs.
The Game of Thrones: Season 2 episode 20 finale ‘Valar Morghulis’ premieres this upcoming Sunday, June 3 on HBO.
