Aaron Sorkin won’t begin penning his screenplay for Sony’s Steve Jobs film project until next month. If he had to start today, he admits it would be tough considering he’s missing the key ingredient that will make the film tick.
In commenting on the task to portray Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on the big screen, Sorkin says he “knows so little” about what he will ultimately write. Obviously he’ll draw inspiration and information from the Steve Jobs book, but there are limitations to how it is structured.
Sorkin does not want to resort to delivering a straightforward biography. He calls that concept as being a “cradle-to-grave structure” that is difficult to shake.
Rather, Sorkin will take the same approach he did with David Fincher’s The Social Network. In that film that chronicled the rise of Facebook, the narrative hinged on a lawsuit between Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and those from Harvard that thought they were entitled to a piece of the pie. Fincher will seek a similar “event” to help drive Steve Jobs, what he refers to as “someone wanting something, yet someone is standing in their way of getting it.”
One place Sorkin may find what he’s looking for is from the other Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak. Sorkin has confirmed that Wozniak has been brought on board the project to serve as an adviser on Steve Jobs, given his extensive time around him during their early years at Apple, and on all technical aspects of the computing world.
Before Aaron Sorkin can divert his full attention to Steve Jobs, he needs to wrap up ongoing publicity and work on The Newsroom, an upcoming HBO drama set to premiere on June 24.
