Paramount is taking the concept of UltraViolet digital copies to the next level and packaged media is not invited to the party.
Right now consumers can visit ParamountMovies.com and purchase UltraViolet movie codes without the need of buying the physical disc that the codes typically piggyback off of. At present there are approximately 60 catalog and current titles available across a variety of genres including action, comedy, drama, sci-fi and horror.
An example of a catalog title is Airplane! which will cost $12.99 for the standard definition UltraViolet digital copy code and $19.99 for the high definition version. Quick rentals are available as well as for $2.99 and $3.99, respectively.
Newer releases are priced a little higher than their catalog counterparts. Paranormal Activity 3 will set you back $16.99 for the standard definition version and $22.99 for the HD version.
I’d be curious to see how many people bite at direct UltraViolet codes at these prices. With a little hunting, the Blu-ray disc versions with a traditional digital copy can be found for the same price or less. It’s the realization of the streaming versus physical media battle coming to fruition at the studio level.
Would you pay upward of $20 or more for an UltraViolet copy that could be streamed to multiple devices from the cloud? Or would you rather have the physical disc version and a more traditional digital copy to share amongst other devices with it?
