HBO aired a short 17-second teaser for Game of Thrones season 2 after the first season wrapped up this past Sunday evening. That tease is now online and can be watched below.
There are two things worth pointing out in the teaser. The first is the green flames which I assume ties into the final shot of season 1. I haven’t read George R. R. Martin’s books so consider my interpretation purely speculation.
More obvious is the spring 2012 date for season 2, a blow to viewers hoping to see what happens next sooner rather than later. HBO serials always begin and end around the same time so there’s no real surprise with this date. In fact, season 2 begins production in Ireland toward the end of July.
The long wait is guaranteed to sell more copies of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels that Game of Thrones has been designed to faithfully translate to the small screen. I’m torn between wanting to know what happens next now versus being surprised when it does happen in the show. Season 1 taught us that surprises are around every corner.
