If you were one of the countless people who pre-ordered The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition on Blu-ray from Amazon.com over the past few weeks, the time has come to learn exactly what will show up on your doorstep and, more importantly, when it will arrive.
Warner Bros. has officially announced that The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition Blu-ray release date is June 28. This epic set of all three Peter Jackson The Lord of the Rings films will span a whopping 15 discs.
To ensure the highest possible 1080p picture quality and lossless 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, each film spans two Blu-ray Discs. Additionally, Warner Bros. has gone back and remastered the video for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring from the original 2K files. For the first time it should look absolutely amazing.
With the films taking up six discs there are nine remaining discs that will be comprised of approximately 26 hours worth of supplemental materials. The rare behind-the-scenes documentaries from Costa Botes, who was granted unprecedented access to the making of the films by Peter Jackson, highlight the bonus features package. Each documentary, one for each film, is a feature in itself and together they run over four-and-a-half hours in length.
Joining the Botes documentaries will be all the other bonus features from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Edition on DVD spread across the 15-disc Blu-ray set as follows:
