Fox and Robert Rodriguez’ Machete lead an R-rated field of newcomers at Friday’s box office with an estimated $3.9 million in ticket sales on its opening day.
Coming in a close second was George Clooney in The American with $3.8 million. The film opened on Wednesday and has grossed approximately $7 million through its first three days and should top the $10 million mark by midday Sunday.
The other new opener, Going the Distance with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, didn’t go far at all with only $2.3 million on Friday. It’s outlook through the extended Friday-Monday Labor Day weekend is a hair north of $10 million.
Last weekend’s top finishers Takers and The Last Exorcism finish Friday with $3 million and $2.3 million, respectively.
Check back Sunday to see if The American can come out on top in the complete weekend box office results.
