New Gods of Thor Movie Image, 3D Confirmed

A new image dubbed ‘The Gods of Thor’ has appeared at the Los Angeles Times that depicts Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and a first-look at Tom Hiddleston as Loki. In Thor’s hand you can see Mjolnir, his powerful hammer, appearing for the first time in an official image released for the film.

The L.A. Times also confirms that both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in 3D. Neither film is being shot in 3D, but both directors have signed off on what is promised to be an improved post-production conversion process that should improve upon what was seen in films like Clash of the Titans.

“I think it tends to be overused and can be a little bit gimmicky,” said Joe Johnston, Captain America’s director. “A lot of people are using 3D now because they feel have they have to… that will come and go and the pictures that deserve to be in 3D will continue to be. When it’s done bad, it can make you carsick.”

“In being able to think in 3D from the start — and having every bit of our special effects rendered in true 3D — we have the opportunity to do it right,” added Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President. “When you’re working with a director like Ken Branagh or Joe Johnston, they’re not going to settle for less than perfect image. They’re not going to settle for something that isn’t up to the artistry of everything else they’ve done on the film … they’re not going to put on some overlay in the last 10 to 12 weeks of post-production for a fiscal reason.”

The last guy you would expect to buy into 3D conversion is Kenneth Branagh, but he’ll be on hand at Comic-Con next week to convince audiences that 3D is the right choice for Thor. “We came to feel that in our case 3D could be the very good friend of story and character for a different kind of experience,” said Branagh. “It’s another draft of the story that can reveal itself in a different way. I had a healthy degree of skepticism up front … I’ve become somebody extremely excited about working with possibilities of doing it this way.”

Lastly, the L.A. Times claims that Marvel will drop some big announcements regarding The Avengers at Comic-Con (Joss Whedon?), as well as try to control damage already done by the mishandling of Edward Norton leaving the franchise.
