James Cameron’s Avatar Videogame Announced; First Screens

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game was announced yesterday during Ubisoft’s press conference by none other than the film’s mastermind, James Cameron, and Ubisoft Montreal’s President Yannis Mallat.

The game, which follows the film’s narrative, is described as taking you “deep into the heart of Pandora, an alien planet that is beyond imagination. Gamers will encounter the Na’vi, Pandora’s indigenous people and discover creatures and other wildlife the likes of which have never been seen in the world of video games before. When conflict erupts between the RDA Corporation, a space-faring consortium in search of valuable resources, and the Na’vi, players will find themselves thrust into a fight for the heart of a planet and the fate of a civilization.”

Cameron’s Avatar uses new 3D filming techniques we are all waiting on pins and needles to experience first hand come December 18 when the film releases. To demo Avatar at E3, Ubisoft has partnered with Panasonic to demo the game on a 103-inch 3D monitor that sends separate 1080p resolution images to the left and right eye for a stereoscopic 3D experience.

The first three screens from Avatar: The Game are below (click on any to enlarge) that depict the indigenous Na’vi and their creatures fighting the RDA Corporation’s military vehicles on land and in the air. The vehicle and creature designs match concept art for the movie that has recently been making the Internet rounds.

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game will arrive in stores this December on Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii and DS, PSP and the PC.
