Weekend Box Office: ‘Infinity War’ Turns New Releases To Dust

Following its record-setting opening one week ago, Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War marched its way to another great round at multiplexes worldwide this weekend. The blockbuster had no trouble turning new arrivals Overboard, Tully and Bad Samaritan to dust with a snap of its fingers.

In North America, Infinity War commanded a mighty $112.5million from 4,474 screens, which brought its new total up to a dizzying $451 million. War’s sophomore session is the second-best ever for a film’s second weekend, surpassed only by the $149 million brought in by Star Wars: The Force Awakens during Christmas week in 2015.

The 56% drop in business for Infinity War is in line with event films of this size. The decrease was lower than the 59% encountered by Age of Ultronin its second weekend but a bit steeper than the 50% experienced by The Avengers. In comparison to the recent Marvel flicks, War’s drop was higher than Black Panther’s 44%, Thor: Ragnarok’s 53% and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two’s 55%.

War will zip past Ultron’s $459 million domestic total on Monday and the first Avengers’ $623 million by the end of its run. Whether it has what it takes to pass Black Panther near $700 million domestic haul remains to be seen.

Internationally, the superhero flick added $162.6 million to the Mouse House’s coffers, which helped swell War’s foreign contribution up to $713.3 million. The latter number helped Infinity War reach the one billion dollar mark in a record eleven days, one day sooner than The Force Awakens.

The Marvel flick opened in Russia this weekend, where it scored a record $17.6 million. The top five markets for Infinity War so far have been South Korea ($69.1 million), the United Kingdom ($67.2 million), Mexico ($48.7 million), Brazil ($44.3 million) and India with $35.7 million. All eyes are now on China, which will open the film this upcoming week.

Way back in second place was the remake of the 1987 Garry Marshall comedy Overboard with $14.75 million from 1,623 screens. Critics ripped apart the new version starring Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris. The Pantelion release scored a waterlogged 30% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 45/100 on Metacritic. Ticket buyers seemed pleased with what they saw. They gave Overboard an “A-“ on CinemaScore.

Hanging tough in third place was Paramount’s A Quiet Place with an estimated $7.6 million from 3,413 screens. Down 30%, the John Krasinski directed feature has scared up a terrific $160 million after five weeks of release. Overseas, A Quiet Place has earned a loud $95 million to date.

In fourth place was STX’s I Feel Pretty with an estimated $4.9 million from 3,232 theaters. Down 40% in its third week, the Amy Schumer comedy has earned $37.8 million so far.

Rounding out the top five was Warner/New Line’s Rampage with an estimated $4.6 million from 3,151 screens. Down 36%, the latest Dwayne Johnson hit has amassed $85 million domestically and an additional $293 million from international markets.

  1.  Tully (Focus) $3.1 million

Strong reviews -86% on Rotten Tomatoes and 76/100 from Metacritic- weren’t enough to persuade ticket buyers into checking out the latest feature from Up in the Air director Jason Reitman.

  1. Black Panther (Disney) $3.2 million (-34%); $693.1 million
  2. Truth or Dare (Universal) $1.8 million (-42%); $38.2 million
  3. Super Troopers 2 (FoxSearchlight) $1.8 million (-51%); $25 million
  4. Bad Samaritan (Electric) $1.75 million

The latest feature from the director of Geostorm was a disaster unto itself in its first weekend on 2,007 screens.

Next weekend sees the arrival of Life of the Party starring Melissa McCarthy and the thriller Breaking In starring Gabrielle Union. Infinity War will remain the number one film next weekend with a gross around the $60 million mark.
