The tragic story of Chernobyl begins April 26, 1986 when a massive explosion occurred at the local nuclear power plant. The explosion sent radioactive material into Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, and even as far as into western Europe.

The series follows several people involved in the aftermath including Soviet nuclear physicist Valery Legasov. He was the first person to correctly assess the scope of what had happened.

Other featured figures include Soviet Deputy Prime Minister Boris Shcherbina; and Ulana Khomyuk, a Soviet nuclear physicist determined to find out why the disaster happened in the first place.

Chernobyl stars Jared Harris as Legasov, Stellan Skarsgård as Shcherbina, and Emily Watson as Khomyuk.

Rounding out the cast are Paul Ritter as Chernobyl deputy chief engineer Anatoly Dyatlov; Jessie Buckley, Adrian Rawlins, Nikolai Fomin, Sam Troughton, Adam Nagaitis, Barry Keoghan, Ralph Ineson, Mark Lewis Jones, Fares Fares, and David Densik.

HBO’s Chernobyl will span a total of five episodes with each new episode premiering on Monday night in the same time slot as tonight’s premiere.
