The 88th Academy Awards hosted by Chris Rock, otherwise known as the 2016 Oscars, goes down tonight and most likely will witness Leonardo DiCaprio finally take home a gold statue. ABC is not only broadcasting The Oscars on TV but is offering a live stream as well. Vying for Best Picture are eight films and two notable missing pictures. The eight nominees are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room, and Spotlight. I expect The Revenant to win, Spotlight to be the possible upset choice, and Chris Rock to bring up why Creed and Straight Outta Compton weren’t nominated.
Speaking of The Revenant, I expect it to snag a Best Director statue for Alejandro G. Iñárritu in what would be his second straight win. Tom McCarthy might snag the upset for Spotlight but I think Iñárritu has this one locked up.
In keeping with the snowy wilderness theme, The Revenant should also win a Best Actor Academy Award for Leonardo DiCaprio and finally break his winless streak. There’s really no second choice here and next to no chance anyone else will win.
Best Actress should go to Brie Larson for Room considering she’s won just about every award up to this point. Best Supporting Actress is a little tougher but I’ll give the nod to Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl.
Other big category predictions include Sylvester Stallone snagging the Best Supporting Actor nod for Creed, Inside Out for Best Animated Picture, Mad Max: Fury Road for Best Cinematography, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Best Visual Effects.
The start time for the actual 2016 Academy Awards ceremony after the red carpet wraps up is 8:30 pm EST / 5:30 pm PST.
ABC is continuing their streak of offering Academy Awards 2016 online free live streaming via the Watch ABC app on tablets, smart phones and other mobile Internet connected devices through Dish Network, DirecTV, Cox Communications, Verizon FiOS, Google Fiber, and other big providers. The catch is that you will need a satellite or cable provider in order to watch the Oscars live stream, and ABC is not offering an alternative means for cord cutters to buy the Oscars this evening a-la-carte.
Those on the Internet via computers and laptops can also tune into the Oscars at the official Watch ABC live online streaming free website that also requires a provider login.
