Tonight’s 71st Annual 2014 Golden Globe Awards show hosted for the second straight year by comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler should provide a first indications of which films and the talent that created them are frontrunners to nab an Oscar statue at the Academy Awards a little later on during the awards season. In the Best Motion Picture – Drama category, 12 Years a Slave is the frontrunner to win, though Gravity could sneak a surprise upset. Other contenders in this category include Captain Phillips, Philomena and Rush, the latter of which is the dark horse to win.
Sandra Bullock is the favorite to win Best Actress in a Drama for her part in Gravity, though the other contenders are equally strong in their own right. They include Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench and Emma Thompson. Best actor is equally stacked with Chiwetel Ejiofor joined by Tom Hanks, Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey and Robert Redford.
In the Comedy or Musical arena, Inside Llewyn Davis has the inside track to the Golden Globe with the competition being comprised of Her, Nebraska, American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street. One of the harder calls is for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical with the field consisting of Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Julie Delpy, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Greta Gerwig. The same holds true over on the Best Actor side with Bruce Dern, Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac, Joaquin Phoenix and Leonardo DiCaprio squaring off. I personally like Joaquin Phoenix to pull out the win.
On the television front, all eyes will be on Breaking Bad as it appears in its final Golden Globes and will need to take down The Good Wife, House of Cards, Masters of Sex and the insanely popular Downton Abbey to land the big prize. This is also the final chance for Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul to win in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for a Drama, respectively, for their work on Breaking Bad.
Tonight’s 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards has a start time of 8pm EST / 5pm PST with the red carpet festivities starting around an hour earlier. My prediction before the Golden Globe Awards 2014 winners list comes out is that 12 Years a Slave will be the big winner with Best Picture and Actor Awards, while Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity will win Best Director.
