HBO’s suburban drama The Leftovers from Damon Lindelof and based on Tom Perratta’s novel launched last night after weeks of persistent advertising with lukewarm ratings, pulling only a little more than half of the viewers that tuned in for the second episode of True Blood‘s final season in the earlier time slot. The Leftovers drew a total of 1.8 million for its first airing at 10/9c following True Blood. An additional encore performance added another 300,000 viewers to bring its total opening night viewership to 2.1 million. True Blood fared far better with 3.1 million an hour before The Leftovers premiere and 3.5 million after its second airing. HBO is still bullish on The Leftovers and looking to attract additional viewers to the serialized drama. Today they teamed up with Yahoo! to allow anyone — whether they have an HBO subscription or not — to watch the entire The Leftovers series premiere free online streaming. It will only be open to watch through July 6 so take advantage of the opportunity now by visiting Yahoo! Screen. The Leftovers continues next Sunday with an all-new episode.
